Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Hires Norah McVeigh as Chief Administrative Officer

Newly Created Senior Position Will Support Accelerated Loan Growth Across Expanded New York City Footprint

New York, NY, September 25, 2024  – The Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone (UMEZ), a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) founded in 1995 as a non-profit committed to sustaining the economic revitalization of communities in upper Manhattan in New York City, today announced the appointment of Norah L. McVeigh as Chief Administrative Officer.  This is a newly created position and will report to UMEZ Chief Executive Officer, Blair Duncan.

Ms. McVeigh joins UMEZ most recently from Technical Development Corporation, a national consulting firm, where she was a Senior Vice President responsible for designing and leading engagements providing strategy, financial planning and market research in support of nonprofit and philanthropic organizations.  Previously, McVeigh worked as Managing Director, Financial Services at Nonprofit Finance Fund, a national CDFI, where over a nearly 30-year career, she was responsible for all aspects of the financial services practice including strategy, deal sourcing, due diligence, portfolio management, capitalization, staffing systems, and financial results.

“We are excited to welcome Norah to the UMEZ leadership team,” said Mr. Duncan.  “Norah brings a fantastic portfolio of experience in working with the nonprofit community, providing strategic leadership, transaction support, financial planning and administrative oversight.  As we pivot our attention to expanding our CDFI into new geographies across NYC, Norah is going to be a critical asset for us in providing management oversight and building the systems necessary for growth.”

Ms, McVeigh said, “I am thrilled to join this amazing UMEZ team and to have the opportunity to help achieve the organization’s growth and expansion goals. It has a long and successful history investing in the Upper Manhattan businesses and institutions, and I’m eager to be a part of its future.”

Over nearly 30 years, UMEZ has provided approximately $260 million of investments in mixed use real estate projects, commercial businesses and small business enterprises: tax-exempt bonds for real estate projects; and grants focused on arts and culture and workforce development.  UMEZ investments have leveraged over $1.5 billion of private capital invested in Upper Manhattan, creating nearly 12,000 direct jobs.
