NEW YORK— After nearly two months of social distancing measures created by New York State Pause, UMEZ has been working behind the scenes to come up with ways to continue to support the vitality of the Upper Manhattan communities. We understand how devastating this pandemic has been to the health of the residents and the economic vitality of businesses that call Upper Manhattan home.
This is why UMEZ partnered with Carver Federal Savings Bank (Carver) to provide support to Upper Manhattan small businesses with their Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) application to potentially qualify for a forgivable loan offered by the Small Business Administration (SBA).
“UMEZ is reaching out to small business owners and nonprofits in the neighborhoods of Central, West, and East Harlem; Washington Heights; and Inwood, to inform them about this SBA PPP loan opportunity,” said Blair Duncan, president and CEO of UMEZ. “We are offering them the technical assistance they may need to successfully submit their applications via Carver and continue to pay their payroll in these tough times.”
“During these difficult and uncertain times, Carver Federal Savings Bank and UMEZ are working together to create a mechanism to provide funding for small businesses and nonprofits in our communities to pay their employees and keep their doors open,” stated Michael Pugh, President and CEO of Carver Federal Savings Bank.
On April 29, UMEZ’s President and CEO, Blair M. Duncan was a featured speaker, alongside Michael T. Pugh, president and CEO of Carver Federal Savings Bank, on a virtual community-based panel discussing the partnership, how the PPP program works, and how it can benefit our communities.
