On Friday, November 19th, Hope Knight, Executive Director of UMEZ’s Business Resource and
Investment Services Center (BRISC), helped award-winning master hair stylist, Maisha Teacher kick-off the opening of
her new hair care and beauty salon, Bibi Salon, in Harlem.
The upscale, appointment-only salon is located on Frederick Douglas
Boulevard at 120th Street, in close proximity to newly-opened
restaurants, coffee shops and boutiques. Bibi
Salon specializes in hair color, treatments, extensions and texturizers as
well as organic hand and foot treatments, and custom make-up and eyebrow
solutions. The full-service co-ed hair salon opens Saturday.
BRISC provided Ms. Teacher with a $115,000
loan to finance build-out and working capital for the salon.
Ms. Teacher is a creative, innovative, and internationally trained
freelance celebrity hair stylist with more than 18 years experience providing
exceptional service to high-end clientele in Philadelphia, New York, Los
Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay area. Teacher currently works as a freelance
stylist for NBC local news and Lifestyle Television (LX) in New York City, and
as a set stylist for The Jimmy Fallon Show, NBA All Star Weekend, VH1 Hip Hop
Honors, the Essence Music Festival and the Food Network. Her extensive training
includes advanced certifications from leading industry experts such as, Vidal
Sassoon, Sebastian, Grahm Web Academy, Phytologie, Phytospecific, Privé, Wella,
Wella Trend, Trucco, Loreal, Goldwell, Alterna, Champ Camp, Matrix, and Mac
Pro.

encouraging the stability and growth of the small business community in Upper
Manhattan through financial, as well as technical assistance,” said Ms. Knight.
“We see our investment in Bibi Salon,
as well as several other businesses in the immediate vicinity as an investment
in the future of Harlem.

salon experience to the ever-thriving Harlem community,” said Teacher. “From
the renaissance to the millennium, Harlem has always set the standard for
cultural trends and I’m proud to be a part of this ongoing movement. I’m
looking forward to servicing the residents of Harlem, as well as guests to the
city, and my long-time clientele.”
As part of its community outreach
initiatives, Bibi Salon has partnered with area businesses to provide makeovers
to deserving mothers. Each month, a selected “Mojo Mama” will receive a
professional photo shoot with an expert photographer, and a complete style redo
including hair, makeup and a wardrobe consultant! Guests looking to nominate a
“Mojo Mama” can submit their nominations online or complete a form at their
next visit.

offers start-up and/or expansion loans to qualified businesses in Upper
Manhattan.Loans are from $50,000 to $250,000 in size, with a
competitive fixed rate, a maximum seven year maturity and there isn’t a job
creation requirement.Additionally,
BRISC technical assistance programs are available to ensure the sustainability,
profitability and growth of small businesses in the Upper Manhattan Empowerment
Zone. Technical assistance includes consulting services, workshops, seminars
and access to a large “how-to” library.
